GE International is seeking empty buildings of around 4,500 sq. ft. that could house a battery storage facility or two acres of low grade land for a container based facility.
With either option, the batteries are designed to produce about 10 Mw of power and will take energy from the National Grid when there is a surplus (usually at night) and store the energy until times of peak demand. Unlike solar PV or wind, the revenue stream is not dependent upon Government subsidies or tariffs instead income is direct from the energy supply markets. Landlords and landowners will receive an annual rent (paid quarterly) based upon the cost of the grid connection and distance to the connection point. GE International’s investors will cover all the development, planning and building costs. In return, the Landlord receives a 25-year index-linked income stream.
We are looking for empty industrial units, commercial or farm buildings of approximately 4,500 sq. ft. (400 sq. m) to house a battery storage facility. The building can be detached or in a terrace, must be in good condition with an expected life of at least 25 years and a minimum eaves height of 5metres.
The perfect building will be near a substation or close to an 11kV or 33kV connection. Ideally, the unit will already have planning permission for storage use otherwise a planning application (or in some cases an application for change of use) will have to be submitted.
For land based solutions we are seeking approximately 2 acres of low grade land giving sufficient space for eleven containerised batteries. The land needs to be flat, well drained and preferably hidden by trees and hedgerows. Alternatively, we can use 0.25 acres of hard standing and construct a new purpose built unit at our cost to house 10MW of battery.
For either option to work close-proximity to grid connection is paramount and again we will handle the necessary planning applications.
Having identified the potential site we can then look for the nearest point for a grid connection and establish the suitability for battery storage. We will tell you straight away what we think and if positive all that is required is a signed letter of authority permitting us to act on your behalf to make an application for a grid connection. There is no cost to yourself as it is purely a feasibility exercise at this stage. Once a viable formal connection offer is received we arrange for a detailed discussion and importantly answer any questions or concerns.
So basically, if you think you may have a suitable site and would like to find out more, please use the ‘contact us’ enquiry form or call the sales team on 0161 696 7332.
